Digital recruitment platform Giraffe launches job board to empower SMEs and reduce youth unemployment

South African tech start up Giraffe today announces the launch of a job board that automatically screens candidates, enabling SMEs to to rapidly identify and hire the best staff.

To address the current economic stagnation and high youth unemployment, Giraffe is offering its new job platform for free to exempted micro enterprises (EMEs) who are willing to hire first-time jobseekers.

Whilst SMEs in most middle-high income countries employ up to 70% of all workers, in South Africa SMEs employ less than 50% of the workforce. A key reason for this is that there are numerous barriers and regulations that stifle small businesses whilst enabling large businesses to maintain their dominance.

One of the key issues SMEs face is recruiting and retaining the right staff. Recruitment agencies are prohibitively expensive for SMEs, who often don’t have dedicated HR teams and thus rely on owners or managers to find staff. This can be very time consuming.

Giraffe’s new job board is designed to help SMEs find qualified staff quickly, by automatically screening candidates so business owners don’t have to. Giraffe also helps jobseekers- especially the youth- by connecting them with opportunities at SMEs that they would otherwise not have access to.

Estimates from the Rockerfeller Institute reveal that as many as 500,000 entry-level job positions are available today across a range of sectors in South Africa but that lack of market information makes it hard for job seekers to find job opportunities and for employers to find candidates.

By using a combination of mobile technology, matching algorithms and automated screening, Giraffe’s new job board aims to bridge the gap between jobseekers and SMEs.

SMEs looking for staff can post a job online at www.giraffe.co.za. Giraffe automatically creates customised screening for each job post. It then sources and screens candidates from its growing base of over 1 million jobseekers. Finally, candidates submit a voice note explaining why they are suitable for the job. Employers can simply log in to their dashboard, see which candidates have passed their screening and listen to their voice notes.
