Last month UNICEF (United Nations Children’s fund) invited Giraffe CEO Anish Shivdasani to meet their executive management, board members and donors to discuss how job matching platforms such as Giraffe can be used to empower and educate the youth.
UNICEF provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in emerging markets. Over the past few decades, UNICEF has focused primarily on early childhood welfare- specifically around child vaccination and healthcare of mothers and infants. This effort has contributed to a significant reduction in infant and child mortality across the developing world. As a result, we are now experiencing a demographic ‘bulge’ in the 10-20 year old band and so UNICEF is exploring new programmes and initiatives to support and enable this so-called ‘second decade’ group of children.
UNICEF is currently in the process of generating and testing ideas for initiatives in the second decade group. Amongst them are connecting every school to the internet, equipping youth with skills to contribute to the growing green revolution and providing mobile education solutions for remote learning in rural areas. In addition, UNICEF is strongly interested in leveraging job matching platforms to identify which jobs are in demand, determine which skills are in demand and feed this back to education and curriculum providers to upskill the youth and increase their employability.
It is this latter initiative that led UNICEF to identify Giraffe as a potential key player in this space. Since launching in South Africa in 2015, Giraffe has attracted over 600,000 jobseekers and hundreds of employers and uses AI and algorithms to automatically match candidates with job opportunities. Giraffe therefore has growing and granular insight into the labour market, and has since identified many job types that are in high demand and do not require high levels of qualifications, but for which there is insufficient supply- such as motorcycle delivery drivers, insurance call centre agents and commissioned sales agents. This is particularly relevant in South Africa, where the unemployment rate remains at 27%, as there are clear opportunities for people to be upskilled and employed.
Giraffe met with senior executives from UNICEF, UNESCO and the ILO (International Labour Organisation) as well as government representatives from Africa, the Middle East and Europe to discuss various ideas for second decade projects. One of the key common challenges raised by various governments and NGOs was indeed the limited access to information they have on labour market demand and requisite skills gaps. Given this commonality across multiple markets, UNICEF now plans to explore the potential of new job matching platforms in more detail.
