In Giraffe’s first ever salary benchmark, we analysed our database of close to one million medium-skilled candidates to generate an accurate representation of salaries for junior to medium-skilled employees in South Africa across industries, roles, experience level and education level.
In this analysis banking and IT were found to be the best paying industries in South Africa. These industries however, only employ around 8% of the country’s junior to medium-skilled workforce. The average salary in the banking industry is R10,300, and in IT it is R8,700. Employees in these sectors will earn more than most junior to medium-skilled workers who earn around R6400 per month.
Supermarkets were found to be the worst paying industries, followed by restaurants and hotels. The graph below shows the proportion of employees who earn below minimum wage by sector; 67% of employees working in supermarkets earn below the legislated minimum wage. Minimum wage, according to legislation is either R20 per hour, or R3,500 per month, depending on the number of hours worked.
Not all well-paying jobs require high level qualifications; the construction industry for instance pays welders and boilermakers an average salary of R11,500. Construction and transport pay junior salespeople best.
Some of the other major findings in this report reveal that
- The average salary for the majority of working South Africans is R6,400 per month
- 29% of working people earn less than the national minimum wage
- Retail is the biggest industry (employing 18% of the workforce) but is also one of the worst paying (40% earn below minimum wage).
- Banking and IT pay some of the highest salaries but employ only 8% of the working population
